The Old Way of Building Cabinets – And Why It Keeps Failing

If you’ve ever built a kitchen cabinet or put together a piece of RTA furniture, you know the drill. You drill a hole, put in a wooden dowel, glue it, clamp it and wait. Or you have a cam lock – you know, those metal discs and bolts that always seem to strip or loosen after a few years. Or just take any self-tapping screw that happens to be lying around on the bench and drive it into the particleboard.

All three methods work. For a while.

The issue is they don’t continue to work. Wood dowels change size with humidity. It won’t last forever, that glue. Cam locks can become loose after a few assembly cycles – ask anyone who has moved a flat-pack cabinet more than twice. What about ordinary self-tapping screws? Particleboard was sliced through like a knife, leaving a permanent hole that grew weaker with each rotation. It’s impossible to put them back in once you take them out.

That’s the hidden price of cheap fasteners. The cabinet is a nice looker on the showroom floor. One year later, the door hinge is loose. Two years later the corner joint is a little shaky. Five years later the customer is calling for a replacement.

What Is a Confirmat Screw?

A Confirmat screw looks different from a regular wood screw. The shank is thicker – about twice the diameter of a typical self‑tapping screw. The head is large, with a Hex socket drive (Allen key). The point is blunt, not sharp. And the threads are a special Hi‑Low design.

Why it’s different:

Thick shank is like a steel dowel. It does not cut into the material like a screw, but squeezes the wood fibres around it. This makes a much stronger and more durable joint.

Blunt point (or Dog-point). It is not self-tapping. Pre-drill a pilot hole with a special three-step drill bit. That’s the extra step that gives Confirmat screws their holding power.

Hi-Low Thread. Two different thread heights on the same screw. The high thread cuts The low thread squishes The result is less split, more grip.

Drive: Hex socket. A nice fitting Allen key in the head. No cam out, no stripped heads, same torque each time.

Let’s be honest about what each fastener actually does in a particleboard cabinet joint.

Wooden dowels with glue. Drill a hole, add some PVA glue to a dowel, clamp and wait. When it works, it’s powerful. When it doesn’t – when the hole is a little too big, when the glue dries out, when humidity changes – the joint loosens. Dowel joints are also not dis-assembable without damage. Once glued, they are permanent.

Cam locks (eccentric connectors) The standard in flat-pack furniture. It is cheap, easy to put together and can be taken apart. But they have a short shelf life. The metal cam housing may crack. The screw may break. It is a single point of tension that connects, and any wobble or movement will eventually loosen it. Disassemble a cam lock a few times and the particleboard surrounding it starts to crumble.

Self-tapping screws. Fast, cheap and easy. But they are cutting screws, they remove material as they work. In particle board (which is basically wood chips glued together) this removal introduces a weak zone. Drive a self-tapper in and out a few times and the hole is too large. The screw never gets tight anymore.

Confirmat Screws. And this is where the difference lies. The heavy shank crushes it, instead of cutting it. The Hi‑Low thread engages more surface area. The blunt point needs a hole drilled so the screw will seat properly every time. And the screw compresses the material so it can be removed and installed dozens of times and still maintain its gripping strength.

The real-world difference: A cabinet joint made with Confirmat screws will outlast one made with dowels or cam locks. It won’t loosen with humidity changes. It won’t fail after a few assembly cycles. And if the cabinet needs to be disassembled for transport or repair, the screws come out clean and go back in just as tight.

What the Research Actually Says

This is not just marketing talk. There is published research on this.

A 2018 study published in the peer‑reviewed journal BioResources tested the reliability of different furniture joint types. The researchers evaluated Confirmat screw joints, traditional dowel joints, and cam lock (eccentric) joints. They tested hundreds of samples to measure failure rates.

The numbers were striking. Dowel joints failed at roughly eight times the rate of Confirmat joints. Cam lock joints failed at 57 times the rate of Confirmat joints.

That’s not a small difference. That is a complete rethink of how you should be building cabinets.

Another study found that Confirmat screws exhibited the highest strength among the tested fasteners, attributed to their efficient mechanical characteristics in particleboard. In terms of joint stiffness, Confirmat connections outperformed dowel joints by a significant margin.

The conclusion from the research is clear: if you want furniture joints that last, Confirmat screws are objectively more reliable than the alternatives.

A Confirmat screw has a blunt point and cannot be driven without pre‑drilling. You will need a three-step drill bit that is designed specifically for use with Confirmat screws. The bit creates a clearance hole for the thick shank, a pilot hole for the thread, and a countersink for the head in one pass – drilling at 1,000–1,500 RPM, about 2–3mm shallower than the screw length.

Once the hole is drilled, drive the screw using an L‑Shaped Hex Key Wrench (typically 4mm or 5mm Hex socket, depending on the screw size). You can feel the torque and avoid overdriving thanks to the Lshaped design. Hex socket drives prevent camout and stripped heads. Slowly drive the thick shank – it must compress the material, not tear it.

Who Should Consider Switching to Confirmat?

Not all furniture requires Confirmat screws. If you’re simply building a bookshelf for your living room, wood dowels or self-tapping screws will suffice. But if you’re building cabinets, ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture, or furniture that needs to withstand shipping, assembly, disassembly, and years of daily use, Confirmat screws are definitely the way to go.

Carpenter shops. The kitchens are opened and closed every day. Corner joints take the stress of doors and drawers. Those joints remain tight for decades using Confirmat screws.

RTA furniture manufacturers. Flat‑pack furniture gets assembled by the end user – often with limited tools and patience. There are fewer complaints and returns from customers with confirmat screws because they are harder to strip and easier to drive straight.
